A Golden Triangle Tour Through History and Culture
A Golden Triangle tour of India is a magnificent way to explore the north of the country, especially if it’s your first time. It encompasses a trip to Agra, Delhi and Jaipur and takes its name because drawing a line between the three destinations on a map forms a triangle.
In this article, we’ll share a tempting glimpse into the charm, history and culture of this trio of picturesque places. Keep reading below to learn more about them and a selection of our recommended things to see and do.
Exploring Delhi's Charm on Your Golden Triangle Tour
Delhi is home to many unique and iconic sights, experiences and wonderfully friendly people. Starting your Golden Triangle trip here will open your eyes to an adventure that’s at times chaotic but never lacking in charm.
One of Delhi’s most striking sights is the world’s tallest Minaret - a tower used as a Muslim call to prayer. The Qutub Minar is 72.5 metres tall, making it easy to spot from far and wide. It’s been part of the city for over 800 years and is a popular tourist spot year-round.
There are numerous bazaars in Delhi, with Chandni Chowk being a firm favourite. Personal space is at a premium here, so be prepared for the large crowds and the sights, sounds and smells to ignite your senses like never before. Art, antiques, electronics, food, jewellery, spices and lots more are on show. It’s wise to give yourself enough time to have a proper browse and engage with the local stallholders to fully appreciate Chandni Chowk.
Many of Delhi’s historical buildings are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We’ve already mentioned one above in the form of Qutub Minar, and another world-renowned structure is the city’s Red Fort. It’s right next to Chandni Chowk, so you can visit two of the city’s most famous attractions without travelling far between them. Built in the 17th century, you can’t help but be in awe of the fort’s imposing presence. The external walls are over 20 metres high, and when you see the beautiful buildings inside the complex, you’ll understand why they were given so much protection.
Taking a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi is a wonderful way to experience the city’s history and culture. Sit back and be guided through neighbourhoods where you can sample delicious street food, do some souvenir shopping, and marvel at majestic temples and mosques.
Given the vast size of Delhi, it’s impossible for us to list all of its top sights and cultural attractions here. However, we hope this has whet your appetite, and you can imagine yourself enjoying an incredible Golden Triangle holiday in India.
Agra's Timeless Marvel in India’s Golden Triangle
The second leg of your tour takes you to Agra - home to The Taj Mahal. There are several reasons why it’s such a popular tourist attraction. Many holiday experiences can be fleeting, but visiting this wonder of the world at sunrise or sunset will stay with you forever. It’s truly magical and unlike anything else you’ll have encountered on your travels. Its setting on the banks of the Yamuna River is tranquil and idyllic and sure to make your top 5 lifetime holiday experiences.
Agra has many other remarkable buildings, including Agra Fort and Akbar’s Tomb. However, we want to highlight the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri. Constructed from red sandstone, it’s also known as the ‘city of victory’. Unfortunately, after being built on the command of Mughal Emperor Akbar, a water shortage made it uninhabitable. It’s wonderfully well-preserved, though, so there’s lots to take in as part of your Golden Triangle tour in Uttar Pradesh.
If you have time in your schedule, we’d recommend embarking on a relaxing river cruise so you can savour the ambience of Agra from a fresh perspective. If you’ve had a busy time touring the sights, a serene adventure by boat is the ideal way to round off your day in style.
Architecture and Cuisine in “The Pink City”
Around 160 miles from Delhi, you’ll find Jaipur. The third part of India’s Golden Triangle tour, it’s the capital of Rajasthan and often referred to as ‘the Pink City’ due to the colour of its stunning buildings.
There are many palaces, temples, forts, museums and gardens throughout Jaipur. City Palace is a particular favourite amongst holidaymakers. It was built between 1729 and 1732 using red and pink sandstone. When you visit the palace, you’ll instantly feel a sense of opulence and grandeur. Part of it remains the home of the Jaipur Royal Family. When you wander through the magnificent gardens and courtyards, you’ll get a glimpse into a completely different and luxurious way of life.
Another of Jaipur’s attractions we’d recommend is Sheesh Mahal or the Hall of Mirrors. You’ll find it within Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mirrored tiles, glass and gemstones combine to create exquisite effects throughout.
We could wax lyrical all day about Jaipur’s outstanding architecture and individual sightseeing highlights, but to round things off, we wanted to mention another integral part of local culture - the outstanding cuisine.
If you love the thought of a perfectly balanced and aromatic curry after working up an appetite touring the city, traditional dishes include gatte ki sabzi, daal baati churma and chicken Jaipuri. We’d urge you to give your taste buds a treat and embrace the fantastic flavours.
When you’re craving a different type of holiday from your usual, India’s Golden Triangle tour will deliver so much joy. This part of the country boasts a unique history and allows you to try many new things you won’t be able to do anywhere else in the world.
