Summary
Ecuador’s high-altitude capital, set amid the foothills of the Andes Mountains, was rebuilt on the foundations of an Incan city by Spanish conquistadors. They bequeathed the modern state a first city with a superbly-preserved colonial-era heart, which has undergone recent improvements to make it all the more attractive to anyone enjoying guided tours in Quito. Largely dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth century and constructed in a mixture of indigenous, Spanish and Moorish styles, Quito’s wonders include Plaza Grande Square with its towering cathedral towers and the incredible interiors of Compañia de Jesús Jesuit church.
