While not as well known as its neighbouring cities, Cochin is still a destination no one should miss. Also known as Kochi, this Keralan port city lies on India’s Malabar Coast among a series of islands. Its history as a port has added elements of Portuguese, Dutch, and British thinking to its indigenous ambience, which is at its finest in the Fort Area. The stunning detailing on the Mattancherry Palace occupies much of the time on guided tours to Cochin, alongside atmospheric old spice warehouses, one of India’s only ancient Jewish synagogues and a fort which has stood guard over the picturesque cantilever ‘Chinese’ fishing nets of locals for centuries.
