Belgium

Summary

When you’re looking for a satisfying city break, Belgium should be at the very top of your list. As well as being home to many of the world’s finest beers, you can also look forward to sampling decadent chocolates and the local delicacy, moule et frites. And don’t forget the wonderful waffles.

One of the most popular places in Belgium’s capital, Brussels, is the Manneken Pis statue – a small bronze sculpture with a universal appeal. You can also visit the medieval city of Bruges, where cobbled streets bring history to life

Description

The Grand Place market square is at the heart of Brussels and more than lives up to its name. The Royal Palace of Brussels and the Town Hall are two of the highly impressive buildings worth a visit if you appreciate great architecture.

Brussels has a plethora of places to eat, drink and really enjoy yourself. The beer here is world-famous and there are lots of opportunities to try local brews that you won’t find in the supermarkets in the UK.

There are some interesting museums to explore too such as the musical instrument museum and even one showcasing the history of Belgian comic books. As you’d expect from a major European city, there are fantastic shopping opportunities and some relaxing green spaces for romantic strolls.

You can’t really do Brussels justice in a multi-centre city break, but your first visit will certainly give you the appetite to return. And if you’ve been before, you’ll know that a memorable time awaits you.

Bruges

In the north west of Belgium, Bruges is a port city with a huge amount of history. The cobbled streets and medieval buildings such as the Belfry of Bruges (a bell tower with incredible views) are testament to that.

If you’re a lover of all things ‘bling’, the diamond museum in Bruges needs to be on your ‘to-do’ list. Boat trips along the city’s canals and brewery tours are just a couple of other activities you may want to experience during your stay.

The city is also steeped in religious history with the Basilica of the Holy Blood said to be home to a cloth with some of Christ’s blood on it. The Church of our Lady is another magnificent example of the unique architecture.

And as we’ve already mentioned when talking about Brussels, Bruges is a hotbed of tasty Belgian delights just waiting to be devoured. You could lose yourself for days in the city’s chocolate shops and pairing these up with some fresh beer will give you a little taste of the good life.

Bruges also has a number of galleries featuring paintings by famous artists such as Salvador Dali. Whatever the weather during your stay, there’s always plenty to keep you entertained in the capital of the West Flanders region of Belgium.
