Description

Sugar, spice and all things nice

Nicknamed the Spice Island, Grenada is famous for producing fragrant nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves, which grow abundantly in its tropical climate and rich volcanic soil. Nutmeg is such an important part of Grenada’s identity that it’s even featured on the island’s national flag. You can take a tour of the gardens where the spices are grown, or sample some of the island’s quintessential aromatic flavours in dishes like the turmeric-infused “oil down” stew, mouthwatering curries, and of course, the delicious Grenadian spice cake.

Grenada is also home to the oldest water-powered rum distillery in the Western hemisphere, where an eye-watering 67% proof rum is made from Grenada’s native sugar canes. And if you have a sweet tooth you’ll want to discover more about the island’s bean-to-bar chocolate industry, with delicious confections crafted from the cocoa pods of Grenadan rainforests.

What to do in St George’s

The capital city of Grenada, picturesque St George’s is home to a busy natural harbour where you can catch a water taxi to neighbouring islands or take a sightseeing cruise around the island. Stroll along the Carenage and watch the world go by, immerse yourself in the bustle of St George’s Market Square, and pay a visit to Grenada National Museum to get a true feel for life on the island. For a unique diving experience, the underwater sculpture park just north of the city is a fascinating attraction, filled with submerged statues that mingle with the marine life below the surface. (If you don’t want to dive, you can also view the subaquatic statues in a glass-bottomed boat).

360-degree panorama

There are some truly stunning sights at the high points of the island. You just need to know where to look! For historic ruins combined with breathtaking views, it’s worth the steep climb up to Fort Frederick, an 18th century French fortress just 2km from the centre of St George’s. From your perch atop the city you’ll get the best view on the whole island – a panorama of the south-western peninsula, including the University of St George, Quarantine Point, the golden Grane Anse Beach, St George’s Harbour and the sparkling blue sea. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun go down.

Amazing isles

Grenada is part of the Lesser Antilles, an island group to the south of the Caribbean, not far from the coast of Venezuela. The state of Grenada actually consists of over 20 small islands, including Grenada, Carriacou, Petit Martinique, Ronde Island, Caille Island, Diamond Island, Large Island, Saline Island and Frigate Island. Some of the satellite islands are truly tiny, while others, like Carriacou, have their own towns and tourist attractions. The curiously-named Hog Island is a well-kept secret that’s worth a visit for its secluded beaches, amazing snorkelling opportunities and lively weekend beach parties.
