Saint Lucia

Description

Natural wonders abound

Saint Lucia is one of the Windward Isles in the Caribbean Sea, formed of volcanic rock. And from the twin peaks of the Pitons to its geothermal sulphur springs and black sand beaches, the volcanic history of the island is evident everywhere you go. Inland, much of the landscape is covered by dense, lush rainforest which is home to exotic hummingbirds, parrots and wild orchids. Cocoa plantations on the island support a thriving chocolate industry, so grab the chance to sample some local cocoa products during your stay.

Soufrière and the Pitons

If you want to get a feel for the real Saint Lucia, pay a visit to the town of Soufrière (French for ‘sulphur’), in the caldera of a dormant volcano. Towering above the town are the Pitons, two cone-shaped volcanic peaks that dominate the landscape: at a mountainous 771 metres high, Gros Piton is an impressive sight, twinned with Petit Piton which is only a little smaller. Many visitors like to take a hike in the mountains and see beautiful waterfalls, or walk the coastal trail along Anse Chastanet Beach. While you’re in the area, a visit to Sulphur Springs is a must – billed as the world’s only drive-in volcano.

At the foot of the Pitons, the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens are lush with gorgeous tropical flora set against the rainbow-tinged Diamond Waterfall and volcanic hot springs.

Castries

Castries is the largest town on Saint Lucia, and its harbour is a busy hub. There’s lots to see and do in the island’s capital: browse the handicrafts and local produce at the markets, shop for souvenirs at Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage, or visit the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which has the honour of being the largest church in the Caribbean. (It’s worth stepping inside to glimpse the cathedral’s impressive interior mural.) Nearby, La Toc Beach is popular for its golden sand, or you can catch a stunning view of the sunset from Vigie Beach.

Pigeon Island

Paying a visit to Pigeon Island National Park, off the coast of Saint Lucia, is now simple: it’s connected via a causeway and you can drive there by car. This fascinating landmark is rich with historic sites and enchanting views. Its two high points are Fort Rodney and Signal Peak, and they are far easier to reach than the top of the Pitons! The view from the top stretches across to the Pitons and to the nearby Martinique Island. At ground level, Pigeon Island is home to some beautiful, secluded beaches and stunning hike trails.

Water sports

The crystal-clear waters off the coast of Saint Lucia make ideal dive destinations for snorkelling and scuba diving: catch a glimpse of tropical fish swimming among abundant coral reefs and sponges, as you navigate the warm blue waters. Paddle boarding, sailing and windsurfing are a fantastically exhilarating way to experience the Caribbean sea.
