While there are many cities in Europe and the US full of exciting things to see and do, India’s culture and traditions make it a rare and iconic place to spend your holiday. We’ve picked out some of our favourite attractions below that will make your Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Amritsar tour package a truly memorable one.
Dazzling Delhi
It’s almost impossible to describe Delhi to someone who’s never been before. It’s bold, bustling and brings together so many amazing sights, sounds, tastes and smells to delight your senses.
Delhi is also home to many of North India’s most famous attractions, including Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb.
Qutub Minar
Qutub Minar is the country’s highest stone tower at 72.5 metres tall. It was built in the early 12th century to mark the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu ruler and the beginning of a new Muslim era.
Unfortunately, it’s been closed to the public since 1981, but while you can’t climb the 379 steps inside, viewing it from the outside is still a wonderful experience you won’t want to miss. Qutub Minar has been an official UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. As well as this red sandstone structure, there are various other fascinating buildings within the complex for you to explore on your Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Amritsar tour package.
Humayun’s Tomb
Another incredible Delhi landmark was also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Humayun’s Tomb was completed in 1570 and is the final resting place of over 150 Mughal family members.
The tomb was built on the orders of Hamida Banu Begum for her husband, Mughal Emperor Humayun. The large dome in the centre of the mausoleum is 42.5 metres high, and it was the first garden-tomb ever built in India. When you visit Humayun’s Tomb, you’ll see several other 16th-century garden-tombs nearby. The wonderful architecture and the captivating history combine to create a memorable experience on your holiday in this ever-popular part of India.
Awe-Inspiring Agra
Agra is another city in North India you’ll never forget. The main reason for this is it boasts one of the seven wonders of the world - the Taj Mahal.
When a monument takes 20,000 workers around 20 years to complete, you know it’s something unique and special. The Taj Mahal has so many incredible features. It looks different depending on the time of day you visit because of how the natural light strikes the white marble facade. It also features diamonds, emeralds, pearls and sapphires, plus building materials from countries including China and Sri Lanka.
The Taj Mahal stands at 73 metres, making it marginally taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. It’s also said that the architectural style of Humayun’s Tomb inspired Shah Jahan to create the mausoleum in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. No words can do the Taj Mahal justice - it’s one of the most-visited tourist attractions in the world for a reason, so make sure you see it at least once in your lifetime.
Agra has many other amazing sights, including Agra Fort, Jama Masjid and the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, also known as ‘Baby Taj’.
Joyful Jaipur
Just over 160 miles from Delhi, you’ll find the beautiful North Indian city of Jaipur. Its colourful buildings have earned it the ‘Pink City’ nickname. We’ve picked out two of Jaipur’s most popular sights below, which are a must-visit on your tour of North India.
City Palace
Built between 1729 and 1732, City Palace is one of the most impressive landmarks in Jaipur. It was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and drew on Rajput, European and Mughal architectural influences. The complex is home to a host of attractions, such as palaces, temples, pavilions and gardens, so you can make a day of it and enjoy your opulent surroundings on your Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Amritsar tour package.
Sheesh Mahal
Found inside Amber Fort, Sheesh Mahal is a destination like no other. The combination of mirrors, stunning paintings and precious stones creates an eye-catching and mesmerising experience. It was completed in 1727 and is every bit as glittering and spectacular today.
Other popular places to visit in Jaipur include the Jantar Mantar sculptures, the distinctive Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze), and the Albert Hall Museum.
Astounding Amritsar
After a trio of thrilling city experiences and so many brilliant sights, the city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab is an excellent way to round off your North India tour.
While it may not be as well known as the destinations above, the Golden Temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib makes a visit more than worthwhile. It was originally completed in the early 17th century, and while it’s a Sikh temple, it’s open to worshippers from all walks of life and faiths. It was overlaid with gold leaf in 1830 and has undergone several renovations since then to ensure its appearance remains magnificent.
The Golden Temple itself is located on an accessible island, and the water from the surrounding lake is considered holy and purifying.
Other places worth exploring in Amritsar include the Partition Museum, the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial and Gobindgarh Fort.
