Our Guide to Travelling in Europe

Our guide to travelling in Europe by rail

When it comes to exploring Europe, nothing can beat travelling by train. From the comfort of your carriage, you can experience the full beauty of the changing landscape, gliding through the scenic countryside between cosmopolitan cities crammed with culture.

Travel like a local, straight to the heart of the action

Over short distances, train travel has many advantages over flying – and Europe has dozens of destinations within easy, practical journey times of each other. Although it’s not as fast as a plane ride, travelling by train can often save you time, especially as you don’t have to arrive at the train station two hours before departure. This means you can enjoy more of your time seeing the sights and ticking things off your itinerary.

You can zoom like a local from city centre to city centre, with no luggage restrictions or costly airport transfers to factor in. For obvious reasons, most airports are on the outskirts of cities, so if you’re visiting multiple destinations during your holiday, things like taxi fares can soon mount up.

It’s not all about city life, though. We’ve also highlighted many of Europe’s greatest train rides through the countryside, including epic rides through Austria, Bulgaria and Sweden. Commuting by train in the UK can be frustrating, but it is a million miles away from making your way through new countries and looking forward to exploring different destinations.

There’s something soothing about the rhythm of being on the railways. Stepping off your carriage and making your way out into the sunshine will definitely bring a smile to your face. Rail travel is typically a more environmentally-friendly option than flying or driving through Europe, so it’s worth considering if you’re trying to reduce your carbon footprint.

5 top tips for train trips

Getting around mainland Europe is simple when travelling by train, and the vast majority of European trains are punctual, comfortable and efficient. If you’ve never ‘done’ Europe by train before, here are some quick tips to get the most out of your break:

● Travelling by train can offer so much more than a way to get from A to B. Taking the scenic route through picturesque countryside can make the train an attraction in itself.

● Travelling in Europe is generally safe, as long as you use your common sense. Take all the usual precautions, keeping your valuables secured out of sight.

● InterRail and Eurail passes aren’t always the cheapest way to explore Europe. Depending on your itinerary, individual tickets or package trips may end up offering better value, so it pays to look around online.

● Travelling overnight on sleeper trains can help you make the most of your time away while also saving money on hotel accommodation, which can be pricey in European capitals, in particular.

● Dining cars or packed lunch? While many European trains offer luxurious dining options, others lack catering altogether. Before you travel, find out what’s available on your chosen route. Taking your own food can also save you money if you’re on a budget, and means your choices aren’t restricted.

A journey full of possibilities

You could travel for years taking in all the sights across Europe, so your exact travel itinerary will depend on how much time you have. Part of the fun of a European getaway is in the planning stage, so we hope these suggestions will whet your appetite for the trip.

For example, you may want to spend a few months visiting as many places as possible before you go to college or university. Perhaps you’ve got a month-long honeymoon planned or just want to get away for a long weekend and benefit from a change of scenery. One of the many great things about rail travel is the flexibility, which you don’t always get with other modes of transport.

So whether you’ve got your heart set on Paris or Venice, want to enjoy a rail adventure in the UK, or go off the beaten track in the Balkans, you’ll find a remarkable holiday by rail to suit your budget and plans. Admire unspoilt sandy beaches in Northern Ireland

The Derry-Londonderry to Coleraine train line in Northern Ireland might be short in length at under 40 minutes, but the journey will live long in your memory. The seven-mile stretch of Benone Beach is a particular highlight, and there are also panoramic cliff-top views and a section that runs by the River Bann.

Several attractions nearby provide even more reasons to take this popular train ride, including Bushmills Distillery, Dunluce Castle and Giant’s Causeway.

All aboard an Alpine adventure to Zurich

This 5-day meander through the Italian and Swiss Alps should be on every rail enthusiast’s bucket list. Taking you through stunning scenery from Italy to Switzerland, the historical Bernina Express deserves its status as a UNESCO World Heritage route. From panoramic windows, you’ll see spectacular natural wonders, including snow-capped mountains, glaciers and frozen lakes.

There are also some stunning feats of engineering on this epic trip, which incorporates 55 tunnels and 196 bridges as your luxurious carriage takes you on an Alpine adventure from Milan to Zurich, stopping at Tirano and Chur along the way.

The best of Norway, from Oslo to Bergen

If you’ve never been to Norway, you don’t know what you’re missing. The dramatic natural beauty of the fjords is second only to the majesty of the mountains and waterfalls in this Nordic destination. In addition to some spectacular scenery, a train trip from Oslo to Bergen offers all the delights of these busy and cosmopolitan cities. You’ll also experience one of the world’s most celebrated rail journeys in a dramatic descent to the village of Flåm.

It’s almost impossible to describe just how stunning this part of the world is. And viewing it from the window of your train means you won’t miss a thing. So sit back and prepare to be amazed. There’s one part of this epic train ride you’ll be disappointed at, and that’s when it’s over and it’s time to get off. It’s such a special experience; you’ll definitely want to do it over and over again.

Catch the Cinque Terre Express

In this incredible part of Italy, you’ll find five exquisite villages: Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso, Riomaggiore and Vernazza. While they share astonishing views over the Gulf of La Spezia, they’re all unique in their own way in terms of dialect, history and traditions.

One of the best ways to get around and spend time in each place is to travel by train on the Cinque Terre Express. It’s a much more affordable alternative to hiring a car and a more relaxing way to explore the area. If you’re not driving, that means you’re free to sample the local wines (Cinque Terre Bianco DOC and Schiacchetrà fortified wine) and the famous Limoncino liqueur.

Discover the historic Ffestiniog Railway in Wales

There’s nothing quite like taking a step back in time by riding on an old steam train. When you’ve decided to holiday in the UK rather than mainland Europe, there are many great reasons to visit Wales.

The Ffestiniog Railway started operating in 1836 and takes passengers on a memorable tour of Snowdonia National Park. It’s great for all ages and guides you through some of the country’s best scenery, including rivers, waterfalls, forests and epic mountain views. It also has the accolade of being the world’s oldest independent railway company.

Enjoy the Eurostar to Berlin and Prague

Jump on the Eurostar in London, then take a sleeper train from Brussels to Berlin. You’ll wake up refreshed and ready to enjoy all the attractions of the vibrant and historical German capital. The Reichstag Building, Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall Memorial are just three of the sights you might want to discover. If you’re looking to stretch your legs and get some exercise after your overnight train ride, going on a guided walking tour of Berlin is a great way to get a real sense of the city and learn more about its past.

After taking in the sights of Berlin, carry on by train to Prague. This beautiful European capital is famous for its architecture and has been nicknamed the City of a Hundred Spires. Among the popular tourist spots are Prague Castle, Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge which spans the Vltava river, the longest in the Czech Republic.

After appreciating the sights, sounds and tastes of Prague, you might want to lengthen your holiday by taking the train to other cities like Budapest and Vienna. Take a look at our Prague multi-centre holidays now.

Experience the magic of the Hogwarts Express

If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter films, you’ll be familiar with the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, including the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct traversed by the Hogwarts Express. So take a leaf out of Harry’s book and catch the steam-powered Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig.

Even if you’re not keen on the world’s best-known wizard, this train journey will still blow you away - it’s iconic, and the views are magnificent wherever you look. There are so many magical things to appreciate about spending time in the Highlands, and the only way to enjoy it to the fullest is to go and let the surroundings feed your soul

Gaze at the panoramic views from the Glacier Express

Embarking on a rail journey through the serene Swiss Alps is an exciting prospect. The Glacier Express will be your home-from-home on the eight-hour trip from St Moritz to Zermatt. The Alpine scenery will light up your senses as you gaze out at the Matterhorn and Rhine Gorge, among other highlights along the route.

There are first and second-class options which serve you lunch in your seat. For the ultimate treat, you’ll get a fantastic five-course menu with paired wines when you book Excellence Class. While you’re enjoying great company and the constantly changing and mesmerising views, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. The Glacier Express gives you close-up access to natural beauty you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see as you pass through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges.

The trip might take as long as the standard working day, but it’s many times more enjoyable. Imagine not having anywhere to be, any emails to answer or calls to make. All you need to do is settle into your seat and look out of the window as your luxurious and relaxing tour gets underway.

Get a fresh perspective aboard the Golden Pass Panoramic Express

Lucerne, Interlaken and Montreux are the three terrific places you’ll get to visit when you book aboard the Golden Pass Panoramic Express. With the most amazing big windows, it’s easy to forget you’re actually on a train passing through the mountains, valleys and past Switzerland’s many lovely lakes.

If you’re planning a trip to the Montreux Jazz Festival, for example, this is a wonderful way to arrive in style and set a chilled-out tone for the rest of your trip. We could wax lyrical about the unrivalled scenery you’ll see from your carriage as you meander through the Swiss Alps, but the only way to do it justice is to see it first-hand.

La dolce vita in Italy

No guide to Europe would be complete without an introduction to Italy. From romantic Venice to historical Rome, there’s something for everyone in this unforgettable country. If you can’t decide which city to visit, this eight-night Italian break could be for you: experience the best bits of Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome in a package that takes in four cities in one trip.

Travelling by train between these sun-kissed destinations will feel effortless and enjoyable. Every moment matters when you’re away, and being able to relax away from airport departure lounges and traffic jams will make such a difference to your Italian experience.

A luxurious trip from Turkey to Hungary

The Golden Eagle Danube Express is the epitome of luxury rail travel. The popular ‘Castles of Transylvania’ route stops off at several awe-inspiring locations on its journey, including Bran Castle and Peles Castle.

The seven-day trip includes five-star accommodation and a mouthwatering menu of outstanding dishes skillfully prepared by the onboard chefs. When you’re celebrating a special occasion such as a landmark birthday or retirement, spending a week travelling on the Golden Eagle Danube Express is an unrivalled way to travel by rail. Picture yourself sipping on Champagne in opulent surroundings as you watch the world go by.

Marvel at the views from the Montenegro Express

Connecting the Serbian capital, Belgrade, to a seaport in Montenegro called Bar, the Montenegro Express journeys through the Balkans takes around 10 hours from start to finish. There’s a daytime service in the summer as well as a sleeper train. You’ll pass through beautiful countryside including mountains, forests and lakes. However, arguably the main highlight is passing over the Mala Rijeka viaduct, which stands at an incredible 200 metres.

The scenery in the Balkans doesn’t get heralded as much as other European countries such as Austria and Switzerland, for example. It provides a brilliant backdrop to this rail journey, though, and you’ll arrive at your destination (the train runs in both directions) feeling ready for the next part of your adventure.

A romantic rail odyssey from Paris to Venice

Why not surprise the one you love with a romantic getaway to Paris and Venice? If you don’t want to fly between these two legendary cities, you can choose to take the train and enjoy the relaxed ride on the rails. This will ensure you arrive feeling refreshed and raring to go.

From the River Seine to the Grand Canal, there aren’t many more romantic places in Europe to go on a boat ride or walk hand-in-hand by the water. Even getting away for a few days can make for a memorable experience. If you’re planning to propose, this trip gives you a wealth of choices when it comes to beautiful places to pop the question.

Slow down the pace of life in Sweden

As the name suggests, Inlandsbanan will take you through Sweden’s sensational inland scenery. So when you’re looking to escape the fast pace of city life, this is the perfect trip to help you de-stress. You can book an option that lasts nine days with overnight stays in hotels along the way in Östersund, Gällivare, Vilhelmina and others along the way.

Passing the Arctic Circle and making your way to Swedish Lapland aren’t things that typically spring to mind when you think of rail travel. However, this is no ordinary trip. A rail holiday on the Inlandsbanan will help you reconnect with nature and appreciate a more sedate way of life.

The unmistakable sights of the Semmering Railway

If you’re a rail travel enthusiast, the route from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag in Austria is too good to miss. It was constructed in the mid-1800s and serves up unbelievable views from hundreds of metres above sea level. The tunnels, viaducts and stone bridges, combined with the wealth of natural beauty, are truly a sight to behold.

The Semmering Railway has been hailed as a fantastic feat of engineering, and it’s not until you’re on board experiencing the twists, turns, ascents and descents that you fully appreciate the work and skill that went into completing this captivating route through the mountains.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a class apart

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express provides a fabulous trip back in time to the golden age of rail travel. With beautifully restored carriages from decades gone by and first-class dining experiences, you’ll be pampered from start to finish.

While the original Orient Express is no longer running, this revamped version travels all over Europe to destinations including Amsterdam, Brussels, Budapest, Geneva, Rome, Paris, Prague, and, of course, Venice.

The suites and cabins on board are extra special and will add a touch of class and glamour to your travels. Wherever you’re planning on going in Europe, there’s no better way to arrive than on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Whether you want to treat someone special in your life or yourself, starting your European adventure on this train will be something that stays with you forever.

Witness the beauty of rural Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s only functioning narrow-gauge railway runs between Septemvri and Dobrinishte. It’s a remote route, and the pace is slow, but that gives you ample opportunity to savour the scenery of the Rhodope, Rila and Pirin Mountains along the way.

There are plenty of stations to stop off at, so you can visit local markets, go hiking in the wilderness, or see the hot springs in Velingrad, for example. Escaping the hustle and bustle of the UK to live a simpler and quieter existence for a while will do you good. The train journey also gives you the opportunity to capture a uniquely beautiful set of holiday photos to share with your friends and family back home.

There are so many great train journeys throughout Europe, but we hope the ones we’ve described above have set the mood for your next holiday on the tracks. Train travel has so many advantages over hiring a car, including:

● Accessing places you wouldn’t otherwise be able to

● Relaxing completely without having to worry about traffic, directions or how far away the next petrol station is

● Enjoying the stunning scenery to the full without any distractions
