Guided Tours to Cambodia

Summary

Although it’s one of southeast Asia’s smaller nations, there’s a reason there’s so much of a buzz building around Cambodia escorted tours. The laidback ambience which exudes across the country, like the scent of tropical fruits at its markets, provides the perfect backdrop from which to explore the world-famous ruins of Ankor Wat, close to Seim Reap in the north. Further south, the capital Phnom Penh is a beguiling mix of cultures. Alongside relics from the era of the Khmer Empire stand European-style villas from the time of French colonisation. Meanwhile, much of the surrounding region consists of small forest villages home to fascinating minority groups and species including elephant.

Description

Lacking the intensity of many southeast Asian capitals, Phnom Penh’s relaxed street life is echoed by the waters of the Mekong River. It flows along the eastern side of this 650-year-old city, which has been Cambodia’s capital since 1434.

Over these centuries, Phnom Penh has gained a reputation as a tolerant and forward-thinking city. Its riverfront is lined with many of its most-impressive sights, not least the Silver Pagoda and neighbouring Royal Palace. Still the home of the kings of Cambodia, the palace is a fine example of traditional Khmer architecture, while the Silver Pagoda houses many important historic treasures of gold and precious gems, demonstrating the richness of the country’s historic legacy. The riverside is also where you’ll find many of the city’s best restaurants and bars.

Outside of the capital, no legitimate Cambodia guided tours can be considered complete without spending time in Angkor Wat, the intricately-carved abandoned temple complex which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Founded a full 842 years earlier, at the request of the then king Suryavarman II, the site covers an amazing 400 acres of some of the finest carving known anywhere on Earth.

Of both spiritual and cultural significance, Angkor Wat even makes an appearance on the Cambodian flag. But what makes the site so special is its rediscovery in the sixteenth century. Even with restoration, the presence of tree roots and flexing lianas around the ancient stones makes for a magical and unforgettable experience. Taking to the air with a sunrise or sunset hot air balloon ride will only enhance this feeling further.

The main gateway to the delights of Angkor Wat is Siem Reap, the country’s second-largest city. Its Old French Quarter has some of the best colonial-era structures anywhere in the country, while evidence of the influence of China is also noticeable in this quarter and the Old Market area. Cambodia guided tours to Siem Reap remain the best way to get the most out of this vibrant city, which has become the nation’s most popular tourist destination.
