Other top places to see in New Delhi include the Red Fort, which dates back to the 1600s, Humayun’s Tomb and the unmistakable Sikh place of worship, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, with its gold-coloured dome that can be seen from afar.

When it comes to street food, there are plenty of guided tours available in New Delhi that will take you to the best stalls for dishes such as biryani, samosas and pani puri (stuffed dough balls often served with spiced chickpeas inside).

Our top tip for when you’re on holiday in New Delhi is to go to the Khari Baoli wholesale spice market just before sunset and make your way onto the rooftop for majestic views and a relaxing break from the crowds below.
