Summary

If you’re planning the trip of a lifetime to Japan, we’d highly recommend including Kyoto in your multi centre holiday itinerary. You're in for a real treat with a magnificent array of gardens, shrines and temples to explore.

Located on the island of Honshu, Kyoto is a former capital city with a unique atmosphere and charm. With around 1,600 temples and 400 shrines in the area, we clearly can’t mention them all here. However, we’ve picked out some of our favourites below.

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine was created over 1,300 years ago and is renowned for its stunning vermilion torii gates. There are 12,000 steps to climb and plenty of incredible photo opportunities along the way.

Another breathtaking place to visit is the Kinkakuji Temple. Its gold leaf exterior and waterside location create an amazing sense of serenity and inner peace. It’s been here since the late 14th Century and continues to attract holidaymakers from all over the world.

For an experience with a little more adrenaline, you shouldn’t miss Kyoto’s Samurai Ninja Museum, which has displays and experiences for the whole family. You’ll also get a chance to see a huge collection of traditional costumes and swords.

Kyoto’s Gion District is well known for its geishas, remarkable restaurants, shops and traditional tea houses. We’ve only mentioned a handful of the things that make this Japanese city such a delightful destination.
