Nicknamed ‘the Pearl of the Atlantic’, the volcanic island of Madeira is famous for its fortified wine of the same name as well as glorious golf and scuba diving. Madeira Island’s capital, Funchal, is home to relaxing Botanical Gardens and farmer’s market as well as a cathedral and bustling harbour area. As you’d expect from an island, there’s a wealth of wonderful seafood to be enjoyed, prepared with more than a splash of Portuguese flair. This includes the local speciality, black scabbardfish, known as espada preta.
If you have a head for heights, the Funchal Cable Car gives you unrivalled views of the rugged mountainous landscape all around you. If you’d prefer to keep your feet firmly on the fairways, Madeira’s golf courses may be small in number, but they more than make up for it in terms of playability and ocean views.
