Located in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, Kandy is a fine and dandy holiday destination. Why? Well, it’s home to several sacred Buddhist sites, for starters, gorgeous green rainforests and an absolutely lovely lake, among many other attractions.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth was completed in the early 18th Century and contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Another spiritual experience we’d recommend is the Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue - a bright white statue of Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose. Measuring an impressive 88 feet tall, it’s also a place to get an unrivalled view over the city and lake that lie below.
Talking of views, Kandy also boasts one of the most spectacular train rides you’ll ever take. As you make your way to the town of Ella in your bright blue carriage, you’ll be lost for words as the scenery unfolds before your eyes. ‘Breathtaking’ is an overused word when describing views, but it’s definitely fitting for what you’ll experience here.
Back in Kandy, the Old Town markets will give you a great glimpse into local life, food and culture. Prepare for your senses to be ignited like never before with the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Sri Lanka.
Kandy’s glorious lake is also often referred to as ‘the Sea of Milk’. It was artificially made over 200 years ago, in 1807. There’s an island in the middle that’s had various uses over the years, but one of the best ways to enjoy the serenity of Lake Kandy is to have a gentle stroll around its banks in the warm Sri Lankan sunshine.
