Unveiling the Magic of Udaipur: A Sightseeing Tour You'll Never Forget

Discover the stunning city of Udaipur in India’s Rajasthan state with our Udaipur sightseeing tour. Established in 1559, it has over four centuries of history to discover. Its two nicknames - the ‘City of Lakes’ and the ‘Venice of the East’, which give you a good insight into what to expect on your visit. You can add the Udaipur sightseeing tour when you book our India’s Golden Triangle holiday.

Even if you’ve visited Venice many times, you’ll find Udaipur to be a completely different sightseeing experience that you won’t find anywhere else. As well as the city’s serene artificial lakes, there are beautiful gardens, temples and palaces among the incredible sights.

A Udaipur day tour may not enjoy the same high profile experience as other Indian cities such as New Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai, but we’d highly recommend including it in your itinerary because it’s a magical destination that has to be seen to be believed.

There are many great reasons why Udaipur has been featured in Bollywood movies and is growing in popularity as a tourist destination. Keep reading to explore our selection of Udaipur’s sightseeing highlights.

Lake Pichola

The natural beauty of Lake Pichola makes it an obvious place to start our list. Taking a boat ride on the lake is a wonderful way to start your Udaipur  sightseeing, while being able to sit back and relax. The surrounding hills, palaces and temples provide the perfect backdrop for an effortless voyage. And if you’re seeking something extra special, touring the lake at sunset is simply unmissable and an experience you’ll never forget.

Jagat Niwas is one of the most striking sights you’ll see from the water. This 18th-century former palace is now a luxury hotel and an iconic Udaipur landmark. There’s also Jag Mandir Palace, which was featured in the James Bond film, Octopussy.

City Palace

We can’t mention palaces in Udaipur without featuring City Palace. Boasting magnificent views of the rest of the city, Lake Pichola and the Aravalli hills, the palace is an architectural masterpiece dating back to the city’s inception in 1559. However, it’s undergone many changes and additions since then.

It’s an elegant and opulent building containing the Crystal Gallery, which is said to be the world’s largest collection of crystal artefacts and it’s worth visiting in its own right.

Jagdish Temple

This Hindu temple has been in continuous use since 1651 and is an intricate and ornate piece of architecture that will leave a lasting impression on you. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s a must-see during your Udaipur day tour. Jagdish Temple stands at 79 feet tall and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Saheliyon-ki-Bari

Another tranquil place to enjoy some time during your  Udaipur sightseeing is Saheliyon-ki-Bari, which translates to “Garden of the Maidens” in English. It began life in the 18th century as a relaxing venue for the local royal women to relax, meet friends and participate in activities and events.

Wandering around these gardens will help you forget about everything else and live in the moment. There are ornate marble sculptures, picturesque fountains and lots of greenery - perfect for unwinding and having a leisurely day.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Another serene activity we’d highly recommend is boating on Fateh Sagar Lake. There are countless opportunities to take great photographs, or you can just close your eyes for a moment and listen to the water lapping gently below. The scenery is spectacular, and there are interesting islands where you can disembark and extend your adventure, including Nehru Island with its lovely park and the fascinating Udaipur Solar Observatory.

Gulab Bagh

Also known as Sajjan Niwas Garden, Gulab Bagh is a vast area with its own zoo and library. When you’re looking for a day doing as little as possible, wandering Gulab Bagh’s 100 acres and finding a nice spot to sit in the shade and relax will be just the ticket.

There are flowers and plants aplenty to provide a beautiful backdrop. There’s also a small train that runs through the garden, which is popular with children and adults who want to take the weight off their feet for a while.

It’s the lakes that make Udaipur

We began this blog describing one of Udaipur’s lovely lakes, and we’ll come full circle to mention a few more before we finish. Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar and Dudh Talai are other manufactured waterways worth exploring during your time here. Forget the hustle and bustle of traditional city life and immerse yourself in a new way of getting around as you navigate Udaipur on a sightseeing tour that  you’ll cherish forever.

If you love the sound of spending time in Udaipur, you can add our Udaipur sightseeing tour to your stay when you book the holiday to India’s Golden Triangle, which already includes a terrific tiger safari and two days in another Rajasthani city, Jaipur.

Sajjangarh Palace

Just outside of Udaipur, Sajjangarh Palace (also commonly known as Monsoon Palace) overlooks the city from its hilltop perch as well as Fateh Sagar Lake. It was completed at the end of the 19th century in 1884 and was used by the royal family of the time to watch the monsoon clouds that were headed towards the city.

If you’re a big fan of sunsets and want a different vantage point from Lake Pichola, making your way to Monsoon Palace will provide the perfect photo opportunity and a romantic way to round off your amazing sightseeing tour of Udaipur.
